new type bit is designed for CFRP application

LMT Onsrud LP provides a drill for CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) to prevent wear and layering. Drilling on CFRP is difficult because three major problems have to be solved to successfully make a clean incision: (1) the quality of the hole, (2) the diameter of the hole, (3) the life of the drill. To solve these problems, LMT.Onsrud has developed the CFRP drill, which has a “W” point, characterized by specially designed geometric shapes and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings.

In order to ensure the quality and diameter of the hole, the “W” point of the drilling machine is to produce a clean and tight tolerances for the cutting edge of the peripheral cutting materials without fraying, splitting or layering. There is a strict tolerance on the drill diameter to ensure that the precision of the borehole reaches the exact size. The new type bit is designed for CFRP application and has a special 82 central point and 50 edges, which are carefully designed and optimized to provide high quality drilling every time.

As with tools commonly used for composite materials, diamond drilling is used to extend tool life, which is a particularly important consideration when processing hard materials such as CFRP. In this case, the carbide drill bit adopts a DLC coating, which USES the PVD process to extend the life of the cutter. Its advantage is that the surface of the drill is smooth and the friction coefficient is low, which further reduces the pressure of drilling. The coating can also increase the lubrication and wear resistance while reducing the edge of the building and improving the flow of the wafers.

These drills are best performed in thinner materials, because the specially designed point geometry shear fiber can effectively avoid excessive pressure, resulting in “blowout” of other drills. The key is to prevent the release of the film, thereby eliminating the lateral force on the fiber.
